Sculpture and Installation Syllabus and Course Outline

Sculpture and Installation
Fall Semester 2012
½ credit Visual Arts
Instructor: Ms. Rachel Obranovich

Room 041
Free periods: 3,4,5,7

Welcome!
In this class we will explore, experiment, discuss, create and, most importantly, play, in order to learn more about art, in particular, art that falls into the category of sculpture and installation. This course is designed for all levels, so no matter what your experience has been with art so far, you are sure to find success, as long as you keep your mind open and try your best!
What will we do??
We will do a lot of fun art experiments in class that relate to the artwork you will be creating. We will learn about and discuss contemporary and modern artists. You will also build knowledge about basic terms and vocabulary used for discussing this kind of art so that you will be able to analyze work more effectively. We may even get to take a field trip!
What else??
You will create two soft sculptures, a found object assemblage, and a wearable sculpture. Within these assignments, you will have the opportunity to create installations, or site-specific pieces. You will have the chance to create one presentation about a contemporary sculpture or installation artist that you feel you relate to on some level.
Why??
Thinking creatively is a skill that needs practicing! Just like working out to achieve strength or physical fitness, the creative mind needs exercise! Make the most of it, and you may surprise yourself with what you can do!

The Basics:
Students are expected to arrive to class on time. When we have this class first period please respect the prayer and announcements by listening attentively. Please do not have your laptop open unless you have been instructed to do so. And finally it is imperative that you clean up your work area and return all supplies to their proper storage areas at the end (in the last ten minutes) of class. Failure to abide by these requests will result in infractions
DO have fun! Be respectful of others! Participate! Think outside of the box!!
Grades:
Classroom Activity Grade (30%)
Any activity we do in class, and classroom discussion, etc. will receive a classroom activity grade. It’s easy! As long as you are engaged, respectful, and actively participating, it’s an A++!
Written Responses and Quizzes (20%)
We will have two quizzes, and the occasional written response. You will receive specific prompts for the written responses. Complete sentences, proper grammar and spelling is expected; personality, thoughtfulness and finesse is encouraged (And appreciated!!)
Artwork (50%)
For each final artwork project and your presentation, you will receive an artwork grade and evaluation from your peers, yourself and the instructor. Grades will be based on personal investment, creative solutions, and application of material discussed in class.
